Conversely, an underexposed photo loses detail in the shadows. The aim is to find the middle ground, where every detail of the scene is visible and clear.

This is why exposure is often considered the very foundation of photography. Mastering this setting is, in a way, taking control of your image.

What is ISO in photography?

ISO measures your sensor’s sensitivity to light. The higher the number, the more sensitive the sensor, and the brighter the image will be, even in the dark.

In practice, a low ISO such as 100 or 200 works very well in bright sunlight. A high ISO such as 1600 or 3200 comes in handy indoors or in the evening, when light is scarce.

But this increased sensitivity comes at a price. The higher the ISO, the more likely your image is to show grain, also known as digital noise. This grain can sometimes add an interesting texture, but most of the time it detracts from the sharpness of the photo. What is the difference between exposure and ISO?

This is a very common confusion, and it’s entirely understandable. Exposure is actually the overall result—the total amount of light reaching the sensor. ISO, on the other hand, is just one of the three settings that influence this result.

To put it simply, exposure is the destination. ISO is one of the paths to get there.

Increasing the ISO makes your sensor more sensitive to light, which brightens the image. But unlike a wider aperture or a slower shutter speed, ISO does not affect the light itself. It amplifies the received signal, with the drawbacks this can entail in terms of image quality.

Should I increase the ISO sensitivity or the exposure?

It all depends on the situation you’re in. If you still have room to adjust your shutter speed or aperture, start by experimenting with those two settings. Ideally, ISO should be the last option you adjust.

Why? Because increasing exposure via shutter speed or aperture doesn’t degrade image quality. Increasing the ISO, however, does. That said, in certain situations, you’ll have no choice. A concert in a dark venue, a child running indoors… sometimes, increasing the ISO is the only viable option for getting a sharp, correctly exposed photo.

The right approach is to find the lowest possible ISO setting that still allows you to get a well-exposed, sharp image.

What is shutter speed in photography?

Shutter speed is the length of time the shutter on your camera remains open to let light in. It is measured in fractions of a second: 1/500, 1/125, 1/30… The higher the number, the shorter the exposure time.

A fast shutter speed will freeze movement. This is what allows you to capture a bird in flight or a breaking wave without any blurring. A slow shutter speed, on the other hand, allows movement to be captured in the image. This is the effect used to create those magnificent light trails at night, or those ‘silky’ waterfalls.

The shutter speed also directly affects the brightness of the photo. A slow speed lets in more light; a fast speed lets in less.

How do you set the shutter speed correctly?

It all depends on the subject you’re photographing and the lighting conditions around you. Here are some practical guidelines to help you get started.

For portrait photos outdoors in good weather, a shutter speed of around 1/200th of a second works very well. For a sports subject in action, it’s best to go up to 1/1000th of a second or higher. For a street photo during the day, 1/250th of a second is a good starting point.

There’s an interesting rule of thumb to bear in mind. To avoid camera shake caused by your hands, your shutter speed shouldn’t go below the reciprocal of your focal length. With a 50mm lens, for example, don’t go below 1/50th of a second without image stabilisation.

And if you want to experiment with long exposures, a tripod quickly becomes essential.

What is aperture in photography?

Aperture is the size of the opening through which light enters your lens. It is measured in values called f-stops: f/1.8, f/4, f/8, f/16…

Note that the logic is reversed. A small number like f/1.8 actually corresponds to a wide aperture, meaning plenty of light. A large number like f/16 corresponds to a narrow aperture, meaning little light.

But bear in mind that aperture doesn’t just affect light. It also determines the depth of field, i.e. the area of sharpness in your image. A wide aperture such as f/1.8 produces a blurred background and beautifully highlights a subject in the foreground. This is the effect often seen in portraits. A narrow aperture such as f/11 or f/16 keeps the entire scene in focus, which is often desired in landscape photography.

What is the relationship between aperture and ISO sensitivity?

When you close the aperture to gain depth of field, you let in less light. To compensate, you can choose to increase the ISO. But this increase in ISO can introduce grain. It really is a constant trade-off between image quality and depth of field.

Conversely, with a wide aperture, you let in a lot of light, which allows you to keep the ISO low and therefore produce a cleaner image. The flip side is a reduced depth of field, with fewer elements in focus within the frame.

Finding the balance between the two is the real subtlety of photographic exposure. And it is also, let’s be honest, what makes photography so fascinating to explore.

Some practical camera settings for different shooting situations

Every scene has its own lighting constraints, and no single universal setting suits every situation. What works in bright sunlight won’t work in a concert hall. Here’s an overview of the most common settings to help you get started.

Outdoors, in good weather natural light will be plentiful, so you can afford to stick to conservative settings. An ISO of 100, an aperture around f/8 for good overall sharpness, and a shutter speed fast enough to freeze movement. You have plenty of leeway, so make the most of it to experiment with depth of field.

On the other hand, indoors or in overcast conditions, the light is inevitably more subdued. You’ll have to make some choices. Open the aperture wider, slow the shutter speed down a little if the subject is stationary, or increase the ISO slightly. The idea is not to sacrifice sharpness to gain brightness. If your subject isn’t moving, a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second may be sufficient. Otherwise, increase the ISO rather than risk blurring the image.

If you’re out in the evening or in low light, this is where the exposure triangle is put to the test. A wide aperture is the best possible option. Combine it with a higher ISO and accept that grain will be part of the image. In these conditions, a tripod can also allow you to slow down the shutter speed without risking camera shake.

When it comes to a moving subject, the priority is inevitably the shutter speed. Increase it enough to freeze the action, then adjust the aperture and ISO to compensate for the loss of light. In sports or wildlife photography, we’re often talking about 1/1000th of a second or faster.

Finally, let’s talk about portraits. A wide aperture of around f/1.8 to f/2.8 will beautifully highlight your subject by blurring the background. Keep the ISO low to preserve skin softness and adjust the shutter speed to the ambient light.

Photographic exposure: as much about feel as it is about technique

The exposure triangle may seem daunting at first. Three settings to juggle at the same time, fractions of a second, numbers that flip… It’s understandable that this might be off-putting.

But with a bit of practice, it all becomes almost instinctive. You start to read the light differently. You anticipate. You choose your settings with intention, rather than just going with the flow.
