Or, conversely, an image taken on an overcast day with a slightly cold, unflattering blue cast? Well, you should know that this isn’t necessarily a problem with exposure or composition. Most of the time, it’s the white balance that’s to blame.

In photography, light changes in character depending on the time of day, the weather or the source emitting it. And our eyes adapt to it without us really noticing. A camera, however, needs to be told how to interpret this light in order to reproduce colours as we actually perceive them. This is precisely the role of white balance.

If you master this setting, you’ll be taking a big step towards more accurate, more vibrant images. And once you’ve got the basics down, you’ll realise that this setting can also become a creative tool in its own right.

What is white balance in photography?

The light around us isn’t always the same colour. The light from a candle, an office neon sign or the midday sun is radically different, even though our brain perceives them all as ‘normal’ light. A camera, however, records this raw reality without automatically correcting it, and that’s where white balance comes into play.

Definition of white balance

White balance is the setting that allows your camera to compensate for the variations in light we’ve just discussed and to reproduce colours faithfully. It all starts from a simple reference point: white must remain white, whatever the conditions.

More specifically, every light source emits light with a colour temperature, measured in Kelvin. Warm light, such as from an incandescent bulb, ranges from around 2700 to 3200 K. Cool light, such as an overcast sky, can exceed 7000 K. White balance therefore allows the camera to adjust to this temperature so that the colours in your image match what you saw with your own eyes.

What are the different types of white balance?

Most cameras offer several white balance modes, each designed for a specific type of situation.

Firstly, there is the automatic mode, often abbreviated to AWB (Auto White Balance), which is the camera’s default setting. It analyses the scene in real time and adjusts the white balance automatically. In many situations, it performs very well indeed. But when faced with complex or mixed light sources, it can sometimes get it wrong.

Next, the preset modes. These are fixed settings that you select depending on the environment in which you are taking the photo. You’ll generally find daylight, cloudy, shade, tungsten, flash or fluorescent light. Each preset corresponds to a colour temperature range calibrated for the situation in question.

To take it a step further, there is the Manual Kelvin mode, which lets you choose a precise colour temperature value yourself. This is the most precise setting, giving you total control over the colour rendering of your images.

Finally, custom white balance involves photographing a neutral, white or grey surface under the current lighting conditions, so that the camera uses it as a reference. This is the most accurate method, which is particularly popular in studio or reportage photography.

Which white balance should you choose?

It all really depends on the situation and the level of control you want over your images.

If you’re just starting out or shooting in changing conditions, automatic mode is obviously a safe bet. It handles most common situations well and frees you from having to manage an extra setting in the heat of the moment.

If you’re shooting in an environment where you’re familiar with the lighting, a suitable preset will give you a more consistent and predictable result. Indoors under warm-toned bulbs, tungsten mode will prevent that orange cast that often distorts portraits. Under overcast skies, cloudy mode will slightly warm the image to avoid the cold blue tint so characteristic of grey days.

If you’re shooting in RAW, bear in mind that white balance remains fully adjustable in post-processing, with no loss of quality. In this case, automatic mode may suffice in the field, provided you make the necessary corrections using photo editing tools. In JPEG, however, the setting is embedded in the image the moment the shot is taken. It’s therefore best to get it right from the start.

How do you set white balance and correct the most common mistakes?

Analysing why certain photos come out with strange tints is what really helps you improve. This second section gets to the heart of the matter, with practical tips and clear answers to the questions many photographers ask themselves, whether beginners or experienced.

How do you set white balance?

The process itself is available on the vast majority of cameras, whether they are DSLRs, mirrorless cameras or advanced compacts.

On most cameras, you’ll find the white balance setting in the main menu or directly via a dedicated button, often labelled WB. Once in this menu, you can choose from the various modes available depending on your situation.

For a custom white balance, the process requires an extra step. First, you photograph a white sheet of paper or an 18% grey card under the lighting conditions of your scene. You then instruct the camera to use this photo as a reference. From there, it calibrates its white balance based on this neutral reference. The result will be remarkably accurate, especially in a studio or in environments with fixed lighting.

If you’re working in RAW, you can also adjust the white balance after shooting in editing software such as Lightroom or Camera Raw. You have complete flexibility, with no loss of image quality. In JPEG, this flexibility is much more limited, which makes the in-camera setting all the more important.

Kelvin values for different situations: a practical guide

When you switch to manual colour temperature adjustment, the camera asks you to enter a value in Kelvin. Here are some key guidelines to bear in mind so you don’t go in the wrong direction.

A candle or an incandescent bulb will fall between 1800 and 2800 K. The light is very warm and very orange. To compensate, you lower the Kelvin value to cool the image slightly.

As for a halogen or tungsten bulb, the range is around 2800 to 3200 K. The same logic applies, with the same warm cast.

For fluorescent lamps, the range is generally between 3200 and 4500 K depending on the type. They can produce a slight greenish cast, which white balance helps to correct.

Daylight in full sunshine, meanwhile, ranges between 5000 and 6500 K. This is the most neutral light, the one for which sensors are best calibrated.

Moving on to a slightly cloudy sky. We’ll see values between 6000 and 7000 K. The image will clearly lean towards blue if we don’t compensate.

Finally, shade or a very overcast sky can exceed 7500 to 8000 K. The cool cast is very pronounced here and requires significant correction to restore natural tones.

These values are therefore starting points of sorts. In practice, feel free to adjust by a few hundred Kelvin depending on what you see on the screen or in the electronic viewfinder.

Why is your photo blue or orange, and how can you fix it?

A blue photo, an orange photo… these colour casts are almost always linked to a discrepancy between the chosen white balance and the actual light conditions.

A photo that is too blue often occurs when the white balance value is too low compared to the actual light temperature. This is common in indoor photos taken under fluorescent lighting or on an overcast day if the automatic mode does not correct the exposure sufficiently. To fix this, simply increase the Kelvin value or switch to a warmer preset such as ‘cloudy’ or ‘shade’.

Conversely, a photo that is too orange or too yellow actually reflects the opposite effect. The white balance is too high compared to the available light. This often happens when you forget to switch out of ‘cloudy’ mode when moving into artificial light, or when the automatic setting overestimates the coolness of the lighting. The fix is simple: lower the Kelvin value or select the tungsten preset if you’re under warm-toned bulbs.

In post-processing, these corrections can be made in a matter of seconds using the temperature slider in Lightroom or any other dedicated software. If you’ve shot in RAW, no information is lost and the correction is invisible in the final image.

Is it better to lock the white balance or not?

The answer really depends on the context in which you’re taking the photo.

By locking the white balance, you choose a fixed value and stick to it, regardless of how the light around you changes. This approach makes sense in an environment with stable, controlled lighting, such as a studio, a well-lit wedding venue, or any other location where the light doesn’t change between shots. The colour consistency of your images will then be guaranteed throughout the session.

On the other hand, outdoors or in situations where the light changes rapidly, locking the white balance can quickly become a pitfall. A passing cloud, a sunset turning golden, a scene alternating between shade and full sunlight… in such cases, automatic mode adapts better and prevents you from missing out on beautiful light.

A best practice adopted by many experienced photographers is to lock the white balance in the studio and leave it on automatic outdoors. All whilst shooting in RAW to retain control during post-processing if needed.

White balance and creativity: why not play around with colours?

White balance isn’t just a correction tool. Once you understand how it works, you realise it can also become a powerful creative tool. Deliberately shifting the colour temperature, emphasising a mood, playing with warm and cool contrasts… so many possibilities open up once you step away from the logic of ‘faithful reproduction of reality’.

What white balance for a sunset?

Natural light at the end of the day often falls between 2500 and 3500 K. It is golden, almost coppery, and that is precisely what makes it so beautiful and sought-after. If you leave the camera in automatic mode, it will try to compensate for this warm cast to achieve a more neutral look. The problem is that you then lose much of the magic of the moment, which is a real shame. The golds turn beige, the reds fade, and the photo loses that spark you saw with your own eyes.

To preserve this warmth, there are several approaches you can take. You can switch to the ‘cloudy’ or ‘shade’ preset, which is around 6500 to 8000 K. By forcing the camera to compensate towards the warmer end of the spectrum, you accentuate the golden hues rather than neutralising them. You can also manually set a fairly high Kelvin value, around 7000 to 8000 K, to amplify these warm tones even further.

Conversely, some photographers deliberately choose to cool down their sunset by lowering the Kelvin value. The oranges then turn into pinks and mauves. The atmosphere will then become more melancholic, almost twilight-like. This is a conscious aesthetic choice and can yield very striking results depending on the scene. It all comes down to photographic taste.

Sunset is ultimately one of the most open-ended areas for experimenting with white balance. There is no right or wrong answer, only different sensations to explore.

Using white balance as an expressive tool

Beyond specific situations such as sunsets, white balance can also become a visual signature in its own right. Some photographers systematically work with cooler temperatures to give their images a clean, almost clinical look. Others, on the contrary, lean towards warmer tones to create an enveloping and intimate atmosphere. In both cases, it is a deliberate artistic choice, not a setting error. Although sometimes a setting error can yield a pleasant surprise…

In portraiture, a slightly warmer white balance flatters the skin tone and creates a sense of softness. Whereas in urban or architectural photography, a cool, bluish cast can reinforce a sense of modernity or solitude. In macro or nature photography, playing with green and golden tones can accentuate the lively, organic feel of a scene.

It’s worth noting that the most educational exercise is to photograph the same scene with several different white balance settings and compare the results. You’ll quickly realise just how much this single setting transforms the atmosphere of an image. Sometimes far more than exposure or composition.

Ultimately, what white balance offers is a way of telling a story in your own way. The light you choose to reproduce, or to transform, says something about your perspective. And that is precisely where technique meets art.
