Snow transforms everything. Streets, landscapes, faces. It casts a white veil over the world and creates atmospheres that few other weather conditions can match. For a photographer, it’s a godsend, but it’s also a real technical challenge.
The problem with snow is that it easily fools cameras. All that whiteness disrupts exposure metering, and without a few adjustments, your shots often turn out greyish and underexposed. A far cry from what you saw before pressing the shutter.
But rest assured that a few well-chosen settings are enough to turn the situation around. The first step is to identify why snow poses a problem. Once you’ve done that, you’re halfway there. The rest is a matter of practice and curiosity.
Photographing snow: why is exposure so difficult to master?
Snow is therefore one of the most deceptive subjects in photography. It fascinates as much as it complicates. Before discussing settings, we need to understand what’s really happening between your camera and all that whiteness.
Why does snow disrupt exposure?
To the naked eye, everything looks bright, almost dazzling. Yet, once the image appears on the screen, disappointment often sets in. The whites look grey, the shadows are flattened, and the magical atmosphere you saw before you has vanished. So why does this happen?
It all comes down to the way your camera measures light. Its exposure metering system is calibrated for a so-called ‘average’ scene, where highlights, shadows and mid-tones are balanced. Faced with a snowy landscape, it sees a vast expanse of white and instinctively seeks to bring that brightness down to that ‘average’ tone. It therefore underexposes the image to compensate, and your pristine snow turns grey.
Added to this is the issue of reflected light. Snow reflects a large proportion of the light it receives, creating very specific lighting conditions. In sunny weather, this glare can be blinding. In overcast weather, the light becomes soft and diffuse, but the contrasts fade almost entirely. In both cases, your camera needs a little help to faithfully reproduce what you see.
How to take photos when it’s snowing? How to take photos in the snow?
Snowflakes suspended in the air add a poetic touch to the image, but they also make focusing and exposure more difficult.
The first thing you need to do is choose a dark background. A building, some trees, a colourful façade. Against a light background, the snowflakes will inevitably disappear completely. Against a dark background, they stand out clearly and give the image its full depth.
To freeze the snowflakes, you need a fast shutter speed, around 1/500th of a second or faster. Below that, the snowflakes turn into blurry streaks, which may be a desired effect, but often makes the image difficult to make out. If the light is low, try to compensate by increasing your ISO rather than slowing down your shutter speed.
White balance also deserves your full attention. In automatic mode, your camera may produce images with a blue cast or, conversely, too warm a tone depending on the ambient light. Switching to manual settings, opting for a ‘cloudy’ or ‘shade’ white balance depending on the conditions, will give you more neutral whites and an atmosphere more true to life.
Also consider experimenting with the time of day. The golden light of the morning or late afternoon on the snow produces images of remarkable warmth and softness. Long shadows create depth, textures emerge, and the snow takes on pinkish or orange hues that contrast sharply with shots taken in the middle of the day.
Finally, don’t forget to protect your equipment; it’s very important. Moisture is the enemy of cameras. A protective cover, a waterproof bag, or simply an absorbent cloth to hand can save you from many unpleasant surprises.
What settings should you use for photographing snow?
Once you’ve understood why snow affects your camera, the next natural question is about the settings. In reality, this is where it all really comes down to. You don’t need to be a photography expert to get great results in the snow. You just need to know two or three key settings and how to adjust them according to the conditions at the time.
What is the best ISO setting for snow?
The issue of ISO in snow photography is often misunderstood. Many people think you should stick to low values to avoid digital noise. This is true in absolute terms, but as you’ll see, snow complicates things a little.
In fine weather and in the middle of the day, the light reflected by the snow is often very abundant. In these conditions, you can easily shoot at low ISO settings, between 100 and 400, without any problems. There is enough light to maintain a fast shutter speed and good depth of field.
On overcast days or in the late afternoon, the situation changes. The light dims, contrasts soften, and if you want to maintain a fast enough shutter speed to avoid camera shake, you’ll need to increase your ISO. Don’t be afraid to go up to 800, 1600, or even 3200 on modern cameras, which handle increased sensitivity well. A little grain in a winter image can even give it a special, almost film-like atmosphere.
Above all, avoid sacrificing shutter speed to keep the ISO low. A slightly noisy but sharp image is always better than a clean but blurred one. Keep this priority in mind and adjust your ISO accordingly.

What is the optimal shutter speed for snow?
Shutter speed is arguably the most crucial setting when photographing in the snow, especially if you want to freeze snowflakes in mid-air or capture the movement of a winter storm.
As mentioned earlier, to freeze snowflakes falling at a moderate speed, a shutter speed of around 1/500th of a second is a good starting point. If the snow is falling heavily and the wind is blowing, increase this to 1/1000th of a second or higher to prevent the snowflakes from becoming blurry streaks in the image.
For static snowy landscapes with no active snowfall, you have much more freedom. In practical terms, a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second is more than enough to avoid camera shake if you’re holding your camera by hand. If you’re using a tripod, you can go much slower and explore long-exposure effects. For example, to smooth the surface of a frozen lake or create a cotton-like effect on a cloudy sky.
Snow on the ground, however, does not move. It is therefore your main subject that dictates the shutter speed to use. A child playing in the snow, a dog leaping, a branch bending under the weight of powder snow. All these situations call for a different shutter speed. Take the time to observe before you shoot and anticipate the movement to choose the most suitable shutter speed.
Taking your snow photography further
Mastering exposure and the basic settings is, quite honestly, already very good. But once you feel comfortable with the fundamentals, there are still wonderful things to explore. Photography in the snow offers creative possibilities that few other environments allow. Two areas are particularly worth exploring: the use of filters and snowflake macro photography.
Which camera filter for snow?
Filters are often associated with landscape or portrait photography, but they can also be very useful in snowy environments. They allow you to control the light at the moment of capture, something that post-processing cannot always faithfully reproduce afterwards.
The polarising filter is clearly one of the most useful in snowy conditions. On sunny days, it reduces the glare produced by the snow-covered surface and helps to recover detail in the brightest areas. It also enhances the saturation of the sky and surrounding colours, giving the images a much more convincing depth. Its only drawback is that it reduces exposure by around two stops, which means you’ll need to compensate with shutter speed or ISO.
The neutral density filter, often called an ND filter, is very useful if you want to shoot with a long exposure in broad daylight. As you know, snow reflects a lot of light and without an ND filter, it is very difficult to go below a certain shutter speed without overexposing the image. With an ND 6 or ND 10, you can extend the exposure time and create blur effects on water, the sky or any moving element in your frame.
The UV filter, on the other hand, is less essential today than it was in the days of film photography. But it remains useful in the mountains, where ultraviolet radiation is more intense, and it physically protects your lens from snow spray or moisture. A practical as well as technical use.
Aside from physical filters, digital filters can also be useful. Some cameras offer built-in effects, such as black and white, which can enhance a snowy landscape by playing on the contrasts between the white of the snow and the darker elements of the scene. It’s a simple and immediate way to explore a different style without resorting to post-processing.
How do you photograph a snowflake?
The first requirement is to have equipment suitable for macro photography. A macro lens or extension rings are essential for working at this scale. Some high-end compact cameras have a capable macro mode that may be suitable, provided the minimum focusing distance is short enough.

To capture snowflakes, wait for them to settle on a dark, cold surface. A black cloth, a dark sleeve or a smooth surface that has been chilled beforehand will work very well. Against a dark background, the details of the snowflake stand out with far greater clarity than you would achieve on a light surface.
Next comes focusing, which is the trickiest step. At this scale, the depth of field is extremely shallow. The slightest movement, however tiny, is enough to take the snowflake out of focus. Opt for manual focus and use a remote shutter release or your camera’s self-timer to avoid vibrations when the shutter is released.
Lighting also plays a decisive role. Side lighting or backlighting highlights the snowflake’s crystalline structure far better than a front-facing flash, which would flatten all the details. If you’re working outdoors, make the most of soft, indirect natural light. Indoors, a small lamp positioned to the side may be enough to create the desired effect.
Last but not least, work quickly. A snowflake begins to melt the moment it lands, especially if the temperature rises slightly. Frame your shot in advance, set up your camera before the flake even arrives, and be ready to shoot within the first few seconds. Obviously, it’s a race against time, and that’s precisely what makes the exercise so exhilarating.
Snow photography: a discipline that rewards those who dare
Snow fools cameras; it melts quickly and imposes its own rules. But once you’ve understood how it behaves in front of your lens, it becomes one of the most generous playgrounds imaginable.
Every outing in the snow is a new opportunity to experiment. The light will never be exactly the same; conditions will change from one hour to the next, and that’s what makes every image unique.
